HERBAL GLOSSARY

Herbal Actions:

Herbal actions describe how an herb works in conjunction with the body — the specific ways it supports, stimulates, relaxes, nourishes, or restores balance to different systems and functions.

Some Herbal actions are as follows:

Adaptogen - Supports the body’s ability to adapt to stress by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and related neuroendocrine pathways, promoting resilience, energy efficiency, and recovery across multiple systems.

Alterative - Supports gradual detoxification and tissue renewal by assisting elimination through the liver, kidneys, lymphatic system, and skin over time.

Anodyne - Supports comfort by calming sensory nerve transmission and moderating pain signaling.

Aromatic - Acts primarily through volatile oils to stimulate circulation, digestion, and nervous system signaling, helping disperse stagnation and uplift mood.

Astringent - Tones and tightens tissues by reducing excess secretions and supporting structural integrity.

Bitter - Stimulates bitter taste receptors to support digestive secretions, bile flow, pancreatic enzyme activity, and metabolic efficiency.

Carminative - Supports digestive comfort by relaxing the gastrointestinal tract and promoting healthy movement, reducing gas, bloating, and stagnation.

Circulatory Stimulant - Supports healthy circulation, enhancing peripheral blood flow, oxygen delivery, nutrient transport, and metabolic waste removal.

Decongestant - Supports the reduction of excess mucus and promotes drainage within the respiratory and lymphatic systems.

Demulcent - Soothes and protects irritated or inflamed mucosal tissues through polysaccharide-rich, moisture-retaining compounds.

Diaphoretic - Supports perspiration as a means of thermoregulation, metabolic elimination, and immune response support.

Digestive Tonic - Supports long-term digestive capacity and efficiency rather than acute stimulation.

Diuretic - Supports urinary output and fluid balance, assisting kidney function and metabolic waste elimination.

Emmenagogue - Traditionally used to support pelvic circulation and healthy menstrual flow.

Hepatic - Supports liver function, bile production, detoxification processes, and metabolic regulation.

Harmonizer - Balances and integrates herbal formulas by moderating intensity, enhancing synergy, and supporting whole-system coherence.

Hypnotic - Supports the onset and maintenance of sleep by calming neural excitation and encouraging parasympathetic nervous system activity.

Immunomodulant - Supports balanced immune system activity by encouraging appropriate immune responsiveness while preventing excessive or dysregulated immune signaling.

Lymphagogue - Supports lymphatic circulation, promoting tissue drainage, immune surveillance, and metabolic waste movement.

Nervine - Supports nervous system tone and function, promoting calm, resilience, and adaptive stress response.

Nervine Relaxant/Sedative - Supports relaxation by calming excessive neural activity and easing restlessness, irritability, and nervous agitation.

Nervine Tonic - Supports long-term nervous system strength, stability, and functional resilience.

Nootropic (also known as Cognitive Stimulant) - Supports cognitive performance, including focus, memory, mental clarity, and cerebral circulation.

Spasmolytic - Supports the relaxation of involuntary muscular tension, easing spasms in smooth or skeletal muscle throughout the digestive, respiratory, reproductive, or nervous systems.

Stimulant - Supports increased physiological activity by enhancing neural signaling, circulatory tone, or metabolic responsiveness, depending on the herb, dose, and context

Tonic - Supports long-term vitality by strengthening organ systems, improving functional efficiency, and promoting systemic resilience.

Trophorestorative - Supports the nourishment, repair, and long-term restoration of specific tissues or organ systems by supplying compounds that enhance cellular metabolism, structural integrity, and functional resilience, traditionally used in states of depletion or chronic stress.

Vulnerary - Supports the repair and regeneration of damaged tissue by promoting healthy inflammatory signaling, collagen formation, and cellular turnover, traditionally used to aid the recovery of skin and connective tissue following injury or stress.

Other Physiological and Functional Terms:

Allostatic Load - The cumulative physiological burden placed on the body by chronic stress and repeated activation of stress-response systems.

Autonomic Nervous System - The branch of the nervous system responsible for involuntary bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, respiration, and stress regulation.

HPA Axis (Hypothalamic–Pituitary–Adrenal Axis) - A central neuroendocrine system that regulates the stress response, influencing cortisol release, energy metabolism, immune function, and nervous system balance.

Homeostasis - The body’s ability to maintain internal balance and stability despite internal or external stressors.

Neuroendocrine System - The integrated network of nervous and hormonal signaling that coordinates stress adaptation, metabolism, growth, and recovery.

Neuroplasticity - The nervous system’s capacity to adapt, reorganize, and recover in response to experience, stress, nourishment, and rest.

Parasympathetic Nervous System - The branch of the autonomic nervous system responsible for rest, digestion, repair, and recovery.

Sympathetic Nervous System - The branch of the autonomic nervous system responsible for alertness, mobilization, and the fight-or-flight response.
